Spades and Carbon Steel Paddle Spacer could be applied in those systems where maintenance is often not necessary. Or, these spades and Stainless Steel Paddle Blanks could also be used in applications with large pipe sizes.
The specification ASME B16.48 Spades & Ring Spacers Standard covers pressure-temperature ratings, materials, tolerances, marking, and testing for operational line blanks in the size range NPS 1/2 up until NPS 24 for installation between ASME B16.5 flanges in the following pressure classes- 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500. This standard also covers the ASME B16.48 Spacer dimensions.
Spectacle Blinds, ASME B16.48 Spades & Ring Spacers must be made from either a plate or a forging specification. This specification has to be approved for use by ASME B31.3, which is essentially of the same chemical composition and material as the mating flanges and piping involved.
So as already described for the Spectacle Blind, maintenance in a piping system could be one reason to temporarily replace these SS Ring Spacers for a Spade. When all the bolts have been loosened, and half of the bolts have been temporarily removed, the Spade or the Alloy Steel Ring Spacers can be placed. After replacing the gaskets these bolts can then again be re-assembled and tightened. During the replacement of gaskets, we generally recommend using newer ones.
