Hastelloy Forged Fittings
Hastelloy forged fittings are engineered for reliability in piping systems that operate under extreme conditions of pressure, temperature, and corrosion. Manufactured through precision forging, these fittings are compact, strong, and ideal for smaller diameter pipelines where leak-proof connections are crucial. The inherent toughness of Hastelloy, a nickel-based superalloy, combined with the forging process makes these fittings indispensable in industries such as chemical processing, oil and gas, marine engineering, aerospace, and power generation.
Unlike buttweld fittings, which are welded to pipe ends, forged fittings are machined from solid Hastelloy billets and shaped under high pressure. This not only enhances their mechanical strength but also ensures structural uniformity. Socket weld and threaded options are widely available to meet diverse installation requirements.
Chemical Composition of Hastelloy Forged Fittings
Hastelloy is not a single material but a family of alloys, each tailored with precise amounts of nickel, molybdenum, chromium, tungsten, iron, and other elements to provide optimum performance.
-
Hastelloy C22 contains approximately 0.010% carbon, 12.5–14.5% molybdenum, 20–22.5% chromium, and 2.5–3.5% tungsten. Iron is controlled between 2% and 6%, while cobalt, manganese, silicon, and vanadium are present in small amounts. Nickel forms the balance of the alloy. This composition ensures outstanding resistance to oxidizing and reducing agents.
-
Hastelloy C276 has a low carbon content of about 0.01% with iron between 4% and 7%. It contains 15–17% molybdenum, 14.5–16.5% chromium, and 3–4.5% tungsten, while nickel remains the base. This grade is particularly effective against strong oxidizers and aggressive chlorides.
-
Hastelloy B2 is rich in molybdenum, ranging from 26% to 30%, with nickel as the primary element. Additions of manganese, silicon, and phosphorus are kept minimal. This composition provides excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid in all concentrations and temperatures.
-
Hastelloy B3 further improves stability, with 28.5% molybdenum, a minimum of 65% nickel, and minor amounts of chromium, tungsten, iron, and silicon. It is designed to resist hydrochloric acid under fluctuating conditions without the risk of pitting.
-
Hastelloy X is a high-temperature alloy composed predominantly of nickel, with 20.5–23% chromium, 17–20% iron, and 8–10% molybdenum. Small amounts of cobalt, manganese, and silicon enhance performance. This grade is valued for its strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
Mechanical Properties of Hastelloy Forged Fittings
The performance of Hastelloy forged fittings is further defined by their mechanical properties, making them suitable for demanding applications.
C22 has a melting point of about 1399 °C (2550 °F), a density of 8.69 g/cm³, and offers elongation of 45%. Its yield strength is around 45,000 psi (310 MPa), with a tensile strength of 100,000 psi (690 MPa).
C276 has a slightly lower melting point of 1370 °C (2500 °F) but a higher tensile strength of 115,000 psi (790 MPa). Its yield strength is approximately 52,000 psi (355 MPa), with 40% elongation and a density of 8.89 g/cm³.
B2 and B3 grades also deliver excellent strength, with tensile properties reaching around 110,000–115,000 psi and elongation near 40%. They maintain ductility while resisting embrittlement.
Hastelloy X performs exceptionally at high temperatures, with tensile strength of about 655 MPa, yield strength near 240 MPa, elongation of 35%, and a melting point close to 1355 °C. Its density is 8.22 g/cm³, making it well-suited for furnace and gas turbine applications.
Key Features and Benefits
Superior Corrosion Resistance – Hastelloy fittings withstand aggressive chemicals including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, ferric chloride, and seawater.
High Mechanical Strength – Forging enhances durability, ensuring the fittings can handle high-pressure environments without cracking.
Resistance to Localized Attack – Elements such as molybdenum and tungsten provide defense against pitting and crevice corrosion.
Thermal Stability – Certain grades, such as Hastelloy X, retain their strength and resist oxidation even at very high temperatures.
Leak-Proof Joints – Forged fittings offer secure, reliable connections that minimize leakage risks.
Applications of Hastelloy Forged Fittings
